The oil industry has been bad for the environment because it has destroyed habitats and animal species by oil spills.

The burning of fossil fuels has released toxic chemicals along with methane and carbon dioxide which both contribute to global warming.

In 1870, John D. Rockefeller,  started a company called Standard Oil - an oil refinery business that made kerosene for lamps, and produced other items made from oil such as glue, tar, and paint.  By 1882 it was called Standard Oil Company and Trust and was considered a monopoly because it had bought out other competing companies. The United States government was concerned that his oil company was  so powerful and businesses could no longer compete. The company was dissolved in 1911 because of the Sherman Anti- Trust Act.
