Our family had always spent time outdoors camping, hiking, and fishing. When it was time to leave a camping area my dad always said we had to “police” the area to leave it better than we found it. The thought of leaving a natural area unclean never was considered.

The beginning of the environmental movement has its roots in cleaning up. As the industrial revolution switched from water power to coal in the 1700s, air and water pollution increased. The smog from coal fires caused breathing problems which led people to demand better conditions.
